2021 Playground Resurfacing

Updated May 3, 2021

Project  Overview

Milwaukee County Parks currently owns and operates 113 playgrounds across the parks system. Some older playgrounds have sand surfacing or other deteriorated surfacing which should be replaced to improve safety. Throughout 2021, Milwaukee County Parks plans to resurface four playgrounds with a mixture of "pour-in-place" (soft rubberized surfacing) and wood fiber, which are cleaner and safer options for play areas. The four playgrounds being resurfaced in 2021 include:

Example of degraded surfacing at Washington Park.

  • Total capital budget for all locations: $325,231
  • See the approved project budget in the 2021 Milwaukee County Capital Budget. Note: locations proposed in original budget have changed.

We expect that Harriet Tubman, Estabrook, and Washington locations will be resurfaced in mid-summer, and Cool Waters will be resurfaced in fall. Note: timelines subject to change.

Other Playground Projects

In addition to playground resurfacing, Milwaukee County Parks plans to complete seven playground remodels throughout 2021 as well. These include:

Milwaukee County Parks will also remove a deteriorated playground area at Highland Park and restore this area to turf grass.
